  • Why then, we'd have sewage in places it's better for it not to be. The way it was in most of the western world until relatively recently, and the way it still is in many places in the world.

  • There are places with 'open sewers'.  Big cities of a million or more!  (Like Kabul).  Sewage just runs in an open trench beside the road, and you can smell it.  Beside the smell there are increased incidences of certain diseases, like cholera.  Because it's harder to keep sewage out of the water supply.  Sewers are one of those 'modern' conveniences we take for granted.
