Why does modern day society discourage marriage and parenthood?

  • Best Answer

Yes. When you load people up with debt and make people have to work multiple jobs just to make enough money to get by, they do not have time and feel discouraged when it comes to trying to start a family. People start a family when they have a stable career, leisure time, and little economic anxiety, which has been gutted in the US since the 1970s.

  • This is NOT modern day society - this is all of the Feminist Movement B.S.  They treat men like dirt, if a man wants a Feminist's phone number - she claims Sexual Harassment.  Feminists demand the tax payers to pay for her Birth Control and Abortions................a person's personal choice is NOT the responsibility of the tax payers.............she must pay for all of this herself.  Feminists are into same-sex relationships and marriages.....once married - they both want to get pregnant and have children............they NEED MALE sperm for this, therefore, must marry a man and stop all this B.S.

  • It is humorous that Liberals are the ones most likely to follow such marching orders.

  • I don't think "discourage" is the correct word. No one is active against either. People aren't interested in the cost and complexities of both.

  • Prosperity. In days of old you had to unite to survive. Today a single person can make it just fine if he/she makes enough.

  • Good question but I don't think it does.

Today, men and women are getting married much later in life.  They finish college, get a good job and save their money for a home before having their children.

Because of the advances in birth control today, the children who are born to parents are wanted and thus better cared for.  An article some 20 years ago in the Chicago Tribune linked this fact with the drop in violent crimes.

Also, children are being born to parents who are often middle aged now...some even older.  We have had such progress in medicine now that more and more couples who were once unable to have their own children are now able.

And Ben Franklin gave the wisest advice about marriage to date: "Marry in haste and repent at leisure."

  • It doesn't. I've never seen widespread discouragement of marriage, other than the usual "Wait for Mr. Right" crap. And the welfare state we live in that keeps children alive at all costs certainly doesn't discourage parenthood.

  • Democrats strive for the Fatherless Family as it makes for easier indoctrination of children in their formative years .
