americans why are coal fired plants being shut down at record pace despite trump's pledge to prop up the industry?

As a coal miner one of the reasons I voted for the orange man is because He promised to end the war on outdated technology like coal.

despite this fact however coal fired powered plants and coal mines are being shut down at record pace. what is the reason for this? is coal outdated technology or something?

Because by the time Trump was elected, it was too late.  Plus:

    1.  Fracking makes natural gas far cheaper than it was in the past.

    2.  Most of the power plants had already shifted to gas.

    3.  I think Trump meant well and really did want to save the coal industry.  But there's only so much even the president can do.

  • If you are referring to deep mined coal the last mine in the UK closed in 2016 because it had become uneconomical. Is it the same in the US?

Much of the coal in the world now seems to come from open cast mines, particularly in Australia, which must be cheaper to operate.

Three generations of my family were coal miners in South West England. The last deep coal mines there closed in 1973.

  • Trump is smart enough to know that if a power company wants to switch to natural gas because it is cheaper and cleaner that he should let them do it. Unlike you, he doesn't want to interfere with their choice.

  • Oh yeah, you're a coal miner.  I believe that 100%.

  • Are they?  Sounds more like state initiatives to increase the cost of energy to their populations.  First, there is a large switch to natural gas energy plants because the fracking revolution has produced so much of it.  They are easier and quicker to build and require less particle-reduction processes than coal.

However, that is only in the US.  Coal plants are still being built at a good pace in other parts of the world, with export demand for cleaner-burning US coal still 3 x higher than when Obama's tenure ended.

US Coal production also remains higher than when Trump took office.  The trend to natural gas was in full swing thanks to Obama regulatory assault on the coal industry and to the fracking revolution that Obama was unable to stop.

Trump cannot reverse technological trends; he did, however, reverse bad policy.

  • Fracking, natural gas can produce energy cheaper than coal.

  • Coal fired power generation plants ARE outdated technology, and even the President of the United States can't FORCE the people who own and operate those plants to keep them running when the local and state governments continue to legislate against them.
