Ours was finding out Dad's mum had been playing the Singapore stock market for years after Gramps died...

After her first husband died,  before I was born, she later remarried another guy named Eddie. But it didn't appear to be a happy marriage.....and one day, he said he was going out for Pizza...........and just never came back.

He had no clue what happened to him,  checked hospitals and all that.....and there was no trace of him.

My grandmother seemed totally and wholly unconcerned.

He didn't take a thing with him........just the clothes oin his back.

But his social security checks kept coming to the house......so my grandmother kept cashing them.

Years later,  we get a postcard in the mail,   signed by him,  saying he was in  "Dizzyland"   (Disneyland)   and having a wonderful time.

My grandmother just shrugged her shoulders and kept cashing his checks for years.

about 5 years after that.......some woman sent a letter saying he had passed away.

The checks kept coming......and my grandmother kept cashing them,  years after he actually passed away......until her death .

  • That my paternal grandfather died of tuberculosis just days before Christmas in 1936.  I had thought the disease was virtually never fatal in the "1st World" for many decades due to antibiotic treatments.  But I find that apparently 493 people died in the U.S. from it in 2014, the last year for which I could find statistics.

  • Nothing to my knowledge, though supposedly my grandfather who passed away in August had a quite a secret that only my step-grandmother knew.

No one else ever learned it

  • 'A' grandparent? Or does it have to be one of mine? My mother's father came over from Estonia just prior to the war breaking out, strolled into the tobacconist's where he was charged 5p for a book of matches. He soon learned that wasn't normal and and was so angry he refused to ever utter so much as a single word of Estonian to his children, should he ever father any, and set about learning English straight away. My mother and her siblings picked up the swears, but nothing else.

  • My grandfather was cheating on my grandma with the cleaning lady that cleaned his office. My grandmother stopped by one day and totally busted them. They got a divorce. He also lost the farm, literally lost the farm and had to declare bankruptcy but that was long before the cheating and is a different story.

  • My grandfather had an affair with a woman and the woman got pregnant.

He then brought the baby home for my grandmother to raise.

At age six, the biological mother arranged to visit the girl and "kidnapped" her.

The girl came back years later, as an adult, looking for my grandmother who she considered her real mother.

She'd been taken to a far away state and her name had been changed.

I never knew anything about her existence until she returned.
