Which word is correct?

As the burglars came in, the child's brother slapped his hand (on / in) her mouth to keep her shut up.

  • 'Slapped' is not wrong, but it's unusual, and suggests more violence than 'clapped'.

    As for the preposition, the best choice is 'over'.

    Certainly not 'in'. 'In' means INSIDE. Nobody would do that, in fact it would be very difficult, especially when speed is essential.

    And change 'to keep her shut up' to 'to keep her quiet'. If someone is 'shut up' they are in an enclosure that they can't get out of; maybe locked into their bedroom, or barricaded inside a cave.

  • You can use "on" to mean over her mouth. But "over her mouth" would be clearer. "In her mouth" implies inside her mouth.
