Is it typical for a college to not let a student back after a medical leave of absence due to mental illness even if their grades are fine?

It happened to a friend of mine at college. She was dealing with mental illness, insulin-dependent diabetes and also doing drugs. She took a leave of absence to get her act together and was not allowed to come back. But it's the kind of thing that is judged individually rather than the college or university having a set policy.

  • I couldn't think of any scenario in which this would happen, unless the student has a mental illness with symptoms that are dangerous to others or other troublesome antisocial behaviors and the student wasn't so much on leave as dismissed from the program.

  • There is no such thing as "typical" in such instances. Each case has to be evaluated individually, and no way to predict any outcome in any particular case. What's the person's mental health situation? Has the person fully recovered (e.g. grief over a death in the family), or is this a chronic mental illness (e.g. schizophrenia), and is there any risk of the person doing harm to self or others? Is the person fully prepared to resume full academic program and also participate fully in campus activities? Any other concerns?

  • Every case is decided individually.  There are factors other than grades that determine whether a student is readmitted after such a leave.

  • There are far too many unknown variables to answer your question.  One has to consider the seriousness of the illness, if the person could potentially be a hazard to himself or others, how much school time was missed, etc.

  • There is no "typical" response to this. Every case is judged individually.
