  • Can the use of a VPN be traced back to me?

If I use a VPN my college’s school WiFi, can it be traced back to me? Apparently it’s breaking school rules to use one and I won’t be using it again but if they know somebody’s used a vpn can they find out who? It’s on my iPhone X, I’m just wondering if they see my name or anything. I’m not doing anything bad on the school WiFi, it’s just that you can’t listen to music or watch educational YouTube so when I run out of data sometimes I’ll turn on this vpn on my phone to listen to music or do normal school stuff that’s blocked for some reason.

  • Is it possible to connect a computer 1000 meters away from the router, by putting an Ethernet repeater every 100 meters?

Best answer: Not advisable, but possible...The signal does degrade, but you could use extenders (two -- switching to DSL between them) if you are wiling to drop down to speeds of about 10 Mbps from the 50Mbps

Better to use an optic fibre cable
Or wireless ethernet extenders (line of sight works well)
Or cellular network connections -- cheapest by far.

  • Am I in trouble with work?

In the past I have visited NSFW sites on my work laptop at home but never at work (I don't have a personal laptop). A couple of times it may have been while I was connected to the company VPN but can't remember. The last time I visited these sites was two weeks ago and I haven't visited them since because I am trying to give them up. Is it possible that the IT department could go back a couple of weeks, see this activity and land me in trouble? Thanks.

  • Can you trace a VPN?

Hello, I ran into a dilemma I hope you tech savvy people can help or help me better understand. I am taking an intro to networking course in college so i am a complete beginner at networking. A friend of mine had his bank account hacked and asked me for advice. Apparantly his bank card had a transaction from a pizza delivery he did not purchase. His history had no state or location of the purchase either, just the name of the company and the $60 purchase. When consulting his bank, they gave him a new card and told him the transaction was untraceable due to the person using Hide My *** or HMA, which is a VPN service. However when copy and pasting the transaction number from his bank statement, we were able to find the state the pizza was delivered to, however not the full address. What I want to know is if there is any way to trace a VPN in the future in case this happens again, or if there are any software's that send malware/spyware to attackers? What are some lines of defense I can take, as well as viruses I can send back to attackers? I plan on using my networking knowledge for good in the future, however i am completely new to it As of now. This truly is my passion and something I am very into, so any info on VPNs and how to counteract future attacks would be extremely useful. Thanks!

  • What do I use to connect two routers via wired connection?

So basically I have a wireless internet router in the front of my house and an extension router in the back. The extension is new and up to date however the connection between the two must be too weak because the wifi through the extension is trash compared to the router. I want to try a wired connection between the two routers. First of all, is this possible? And if so what cable would I use? An Ethernet?

  • How to connect to WiFi that says 'internet may not be available'?

Best answer: Actually, it sounds like you're already connected to the Wi-Fi router. Now it's telling you there's a problem between the router and the ISP. If this is your router you should try powering it off for 20 seconds, then powering it back on. Give the router a minute to boot back up then retest with your device's browser.

  • What would be the difference between plugging a switch into your router, and plugging another router into the main router?

Best answer: When you connected the router from LAN to the WAN side of the other, you created 2 networks. Things one on segment cannot talk to the other easily, like you have to tweak lots of firewall rules and network discovery is broken, like printer discovery.

If you went LAN to LAN AND turned off things on the second router, then you both extend the wired side AND the wireless side, and everything is on one network. This is AP mode, but a waste of the routing engine and firewall software of the second router.

When in AP mode, the AP is just a dumb switch for both wired and wireless.

A switch is just a wired network extender, and used to get more ports on a network.
